To enroll in MAX, you must first fill out the Summer Sessions enrollment application.  Once your application has been processed, you will receive information about registering for classes in GOLD. Log into GOLD and register for the online class, INT W 25: Bridge to STEM. You will need an enrollment code that pertains to the class time that you select. Please see the codes below.

TWR    9:00-10:30am, Enrollment Code: 21725

TWR   10:00-11:30am, Enrollment Code: 21717

TWR   11:30- 1:00pm, Enrollment Code: 21733

If you need assistance using GOLD, take a look at the GOLD 101 Basics video.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are also planning to participate in Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP), you will not register for INT W 25 through GOLD. Instead you will select the course when you submit your FSSP Course Preference Form. If you need assistance email fssp@summer.ucsb.edu.

The course takes place online August 5-September 14, 2024. The course has asynchronous (work on your own) and synchronous (work with others) components. The program continues in Fall 2024 with mentoring by MAX faculty and UCSB students.

Students participating in MAX will receive a campus scholarship for INTW25 (Bridge to STEM) tuition in Summer Session B. Students must still pay campus-based fees of $546.69 and a technology fee of $26.53, so the total cost of the course will be $586.49. Please note: if you enroll in the course, a total of $1689.22 will appear on your summer bill, but the scholarship will be applied upon successful completion of the course and only $573.22 will remain.

There is no cost to continue participating in MAX during Fall quarter. Students will receive mentoring from undergraduates and UCSB faculty as part of their participation.

Yes, you can participate in both FSSP and MAX. More information about FSSP is available here.
If you are participating in Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP) the cost for Bridge to STEM will be built into your total tuition for FSSP.

Unfortunately, no. MAX and STEP program dates overlap. Each program provides unique opportunities. Students are encouraged to consider their personal and academic goals when determining which program would be best for them. More information about the Summer Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP) is available here.

You are highly encouraged to attend an Orientation session before MAX begins.

The Disabled Students Program (DSP) offers a robust program to accommodate students with a wide variety of documented needs. Learn more here.

If your friend has also been admitted to UCSB, yes, they can join.

Yes. The course INT W25 counts as “elective credit” toward a UCSB degree. “Elective credit” is required for graduation.

  • MAX can give you a head start on earning units toward graduation before Fall quarter.
  • The course, INT W25, can give you the confidence needed to succeed in fast-paced STEM courses during your first year at UCSB.
  • An experienced MAX peer mentor can help you navigate your first year at UCSB.
  • UCSB students who take summer courses are about 30% more likely to graduate on time.
  • Students who participate in summer bridge programs between high school and college do better in their first year, and are less likely to end up on academic review.

The course begins on August 5th and ends on September 14th.

Yes, the course takes place online. It has asynchronous (work on your own) and synchronous (work with others) components.

One unit represents 5 hours of work per week. This is a 4 unit course. You should devote approximately 20 hours per week.

Yes. However, you will need to arrange your work times around the synchronous (work with others) meetings of the course on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

When you register for INTW25, you'll choose a "section" of the course. Each section is offered at a different time and is taught by a different faculty member, but all sections will have synchronous sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week. The material in each section will be identical, so you can choose the best time for your schedule.

9:00am-10:30am - Professor Lalo Gonzalez

10:00am-11:30am - Professor Crisjoe Joseph

10:30am-12:00pm - Professor John Hartman

1:00pm-2:30pm - Professor Holly Moeller

You’ll learn about topics and gain skills that students say they need to re-learn and practice throughout their UCSB careers.

Topics include telling stories with data; units and conversions; systems of equations; linear functions; exponential functions; and probability.

Skills include navigating how you’ll learn; using help that’s there for you; taking the sting out of struggle; managing your time on the quarter system; communicating with professors and TAs; and adapting your learning for different courses.

Every week of the course will follow the same pattern

Mondays: Watch a lecture and complete a quiz on lecture content,
watch a video on STEM navigation skills, and attend office hours (a place where you can discuss course material with your instructor and fellow students).  Office hours are optional, but highly encouraged.

Tuesdays: Attend synchronous, in-person sessions.

Wednesdays: Meet synchronously with your in-person undergraduate learning mentor about the week’s case study.

Thursdays: Meet synchronously with your in-person undergraduate learning mentor about the week’s concept, case study, and forum questions. Weekly quiz unlocked; due Monday night.

Fridays: Office hours with your TA. Office hours are optional, but highly encouraged.
